Robert Brown to go to the Court of Appeal

https://www.mojuk.org.uk/eddie/rob.html

At long last, at 4.30pm on Wednesday, the 7th of June, the Criminal Case Review Commission have announced that they are to allow the case of Robert Browns conviction for murder of Annie Walsh , in Manchester 1977, to be sent back to the appeal court. Robert Brown has now spent 25 years in prison constantly pleading his innocence. Hopefully this will end the psychological wringer that Robert Brown has had to endure over the last 6 months, waiting to hear from the C.C.R.C. on their decision.

It will now be up to the Royal Court of Appeal in London to decide the fate of Robert Brown. We wait to find out if Robert Brown will be allowed interim release on bail.

John McManus , said "I can see no reason for this to be prevented, as Robert is not a danger to society, has a seriously ill Mother, and has now served twelve years over his tariff. It would be a cruel act of inhumanity to refuse this man his first steps towards freedom at this stage."

For the Miscarriages of Justice Organisation Robert Brown's case is one of the worst cases we have came across. The evidence that convicted Robert Brown, a signed confession, would not only never have been allowed in a Scottish court, but since 1984 PACE act, would never be allowed in an English court. There is glaring disturbances when you look at Brown's case, not only his treatment in the Police custody, his lack of competent legal defence at his trial, but even more seriously has been his treatment in prison. Particularly since 1989 when he first fronted the parole board, and when refuted that he was innocent, found himself no longer acceptable for parole, and has had to fight an uphill battle with the authorities ever since.

With little or no help in his Sisyphus struggle to clear his name. The question has to be asked. Why has this case taken so long to surface? The silence from Britains media has been has been deafening. Because even today the majority of people on the streets of Great Britain have still never heard of the name Robert Brown. What kind of society ignores the cries of innocent men and women in UK prisons?

So for every editor, commissioner and decision maker within British television and newspaper industry, who have said 'where's the story', 'is there an angle', should hang their head's in shame. It's news because people are unaware of what is being perpetrated on innocent people, in their name. Don't blame the punter blame the messenger, or rather in this case, lack of messenger.

Many of us would also like to know why it has taken the Criminal Case Review Commission, who received his case in 1997, five years to decide on the outcome of this case being sent back to the appeal court? How are they prioritising cases?

I would implore all right thinking people, who truly believe in justice, not just for Robert Brown but also for Annie Walsh, to keep their eyes on this case. It isn't over until Robert Brown walks out of court a free man. How long will that take? Will they re-open the case? These are some of the many questions that have still to be answered.
