Police Officers Disciplined Over Rapist Sergeant

Six officers have been disciplined following an investigation into the case of a police sergeant who was jailed for rape.

The officers, who work for Cambridgeshire Police, were subjected to disciplinary action ranging from "words of advice" to a formal written warning.

Cambridgeshire Police Sergeant Paul Banfield was jailed for 18 years at Nottingham Crown Court two years ago.

He was convicted of two charges of rape, one of burglary with intent to rape, and five charges of indecent assault.

Cambridgeshire Police took disciplinary action following an investigation into the Banfield affair by Metropolitan Police officers.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner William Griffiths led the inquiry, which examined a range of "procedural and process issues" surrounding the Banfield case.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokeswoman said: "The report from the Metropolitan Police has been carefully considered by Cambridgeshire Constabulary and by Cambridgeshire Police Authority.

"As a result of the report's findings and the recommendations therein, six officers have been the subject of disciplinary action ranging from words of advice to a formal written warning."
